BITCHES

It was my great pleasure to judge the bitch entry where there was a total of 149 Gordons. This is one of my favourite breeds, having become acquainted with them in the 1960s when I knew Mr and Mrs George Knight and their Kinlochleven Gordons. Their son George was head boy at my school and I became friendly with them when showing my first dog. They inherited  Salters Black Tulip of Calbrie and Salters Black Duke of Calbrie, so I had some good models to learn from, a happy reminiscence.

At this show I found plenty of lovely bitches but there were a few which were too tall for my taste and too racy. I also found quite a lot of long tails carried too high. However, these were outweighed by the type and quality present in many classes and I think the breed is in good shape and in good hands, and one of the reasons for this is the sporting crowd of exhibitors and breed enthusiasts who appreciate each others dogs. I firmly believe that this is what helps a breed to prosper in the show ring and in the breeding. Just take a long at breeds where there are rival camps and lack of collaboration and  an acid house atmosphere  around the rings, you will usually see that the entries and the quality in these breeds is in decline, so long may this sportsmanship continue in the Gordon Setter world.

I had as my excellent stewards Jayne and Ben Bennett, whom I remembered from Field Spaniels and had not known of their Gordon Setter involvement. As my co judge, Carole Moore judged the dogs and I appreciated her excellent line up for the challenge. Our discussions for the top awards revealed that we were seeing the breed in the same light and we had amicable agreement on all the awards.

BEST IN SHOW was the veteran dog SH CH LAURELHACH LIMITED EDITION AT YOHENOAK, a beautiful  Gordon all through, and in his mature prime. Both he and the reserve dog CC winner , which I also liked immensely,  SH CH LUDSTAR FREDERICK FRANKENSTEIN, had the pull in maturity over the bitch CC winner  the 20 months old AMSCOT LOVE IS IN THE AIR, and I was happy to agree to the males taking the two top awards. The winning bitch, from the Yearling class filled my eye from her entering the ring. She is full of breed type and an excellent and stylish mover. In the challenge her head and expression appealed just a little more than the Open bitch winner. I thought I was sticking my neck out to give a youngster the CC in a late maturing breed, but discovered later that it was her second. She is destined for a great future I believe.

BEST PUPPY went to the 11 months bitch CARACAILLIE CHIANTI WITH MARSHMOOR and reserve to the 6 months baby LOCKSHEATH PRINCESS TIANA.

I had a thoroughly enjoyable day with dog showing and sportsmanship as it should be, and will be one of the best memories of my canine year. Thank you.

VETERAN

1 SH CH HERNWOOD CALYPSO GODDESS at 7 years old she is in top form and holds her good shape  on the move. She has a quality head and eye, lovely coat and colours and moves stylishly.

2 PEGASETT BLACK N’ TANTRUM pressed hard as she is better ribbed than the winner and has a lovely head but a touch narrow in front  and not as firm in topline. However I was splitting hairs in this close decision as both are top quality bitches

1 LOCKSHEATH PRINCESS TIARA 6 months and she has lovely breed type, forward in body and with good head and eye. Excellent colours. As is to be expect ed,  she is a work in progress and her front action is a little flappy and she can grow into her tail but she has a lot of promise

2 LOCKSHEATH PRINCESS ARISTA litter sister and has the same type and quality but needs schooling to make the most of her

Scored in bone and feet to take this spot over

3 MELVIEW PHOENIX

PUPPY 1 CAIRACAILLIE CHIANTI OF MARSHMOOR 11 months top sized bitch who scored in chest and front action to win this. Well ribbed and carries a firm topline. She has a good head and eye. Her tai, is a little long but she carries it correctly. Quality throughout, in excellent condition. Best Puppy

2 GLENQUIN PHOENIX 11 months, pressed hard as I liked her standing for outline, balance and size. She needs to develop in chest and this shows in her front action. Needing to develop there and in rib now but should finish very well

3 L PRINCESS ANSTA

JUNIOR

1 HERNWOOD APHRODITE 17 months with excellent body and topline and scoring  in rear assembly and bone here. I would prefer cleaner cheeks and a softer expression. Good tailset and tail and a very good mover.

2 LIGNUM BLACKLIGTNING AT KILNRAE  16 months whose head I preferred to the winner and she is a very stylish mover. In beautiful condition and full of quality. I thought she looked a little racy at the moment but maturity of body should make her a top class bitch

3 LUDSTAR LA LA LAND TO LIRIC

YEARLING

1 AMSCOT LOVE IS IN THE AIR  20 months and won the CC

2  TOGIPOTO TENNESSEE TITAN 20 months  top size bitch who is a little long for balance but maturity of body should  help her. At the moment a too narrow in  front but scores in  rear angulation

.I liked her head and this put her in  2nd place

1 PEGASETT MIZ GUIDANCE 19months full of quality and in beautiful condition with gleaming coal  black  coat and rich tan. Well balanced with an excellent head. Needs to finish in  chest but she is young and has time for this .Very promising

2 LOURDACE EVENSONG 2 years, not flashy and she could be a little brighter in tan but she is a good mover at both ends. Gordon for proportions rib, croup and tail. Well built and a very good mover. These qualities outweighed her minor failing for me.

2 year old of lovely type and quality and shown in excellent condition. Very good head and eyes and good colours. Excellent with very good chest and front in which she scored here. Goes soundly at both ends but she could have a little more style to make the most of her qualities  but a top quality bitch

2 JALEWLA JUNIPER TREE this two year old pressed hard as she has wonderful style and carriage and  really takes the eye on the move with very good side gait. Excellent outline. Not as developed in the chest as the winner and so not as firm in front but she is full of quality.

1 PEGASETT SCOTCH FERN a stylish bitch who really uses her hocks on the move.

Good proportions and balance. Just a touch strong in her cheeks to balance  her muzzle. Her carriage won her this class

2 CHARTAN TREACLE TART this 4 year old appealed greatly for her size and scored over the winner in head. She was not in her best coat and looked unfinished beside the winner but she is a quality Gordon all through.

1 HERNWOOD STORM DIVA FROM TOGIPOTO 6 year old worthy of her title for her excellent  type throughout  with very good head and eye. Good coat and colours. Stylish on the move with good topline and tail carriage. Shown very well.

2 HERNWOOD LUNA ECLIPSE 3 year old with beautiful head and expression. Presented as always from this kennel to make the most of her. She is a touch racier in type than the winner and was not quite as good in feet or front action but she is full of quality

1 SH CH  HERNWOOD CAUSIN A STORM FOR TOGIPOTO  a beautiful bitch all through for type and movement and just scoring here in firmness of topline in a close decision. Great reach and drive and full of setter style. She has a good head which could have a little more work to it but overall a beautiful bitch. Won reserve CC

2 INT CH STORSKOGEN AMORJOY OF AMSCOT lovely bitch who scored in softness of expression and chiselling. A little darker in her tan than the winner. A good mover but not as firm in topline on the move. I see she is dam of the CC winner…what a treasure to own!

1 DUAL CH BOYERS SCARLATTI  at 10 years old she is a remarkable bitch as  she retains her breed type and soundness and she is in excellent condition, using her hocks firmly and carrying a good topline. Lovely head and eye. What a wonderful ambassador for the breed and for show gundogs, with her dual title to show that brains and beauty can go together  and here is  a great example of fitness for function.

CLASS 1: VETERAN DOG

1st Ms Halliday with CH YENNADON THE DRUID JW. Nice boy, good head, good neck, well laid shoulder, good front and rear angulation, good depth of chest. Moved well. Also went on to win best veteran.

CLASS 2: MINOR PUPPY DOG

1st Mrs Horler with HERNWOOD JACK O’LANTERN BY RACKENS. Nice boy, nice head and good top line. Moved nice and steady, just had the edge over 2nd place.

2nd Mr Roberts with CAIRACAILIE SPICE OF LIFE. Nice little lad, lovely head. Nice lovely top line, just not as steady on the move yet.

CLASS 3: PUPPY

1st Miss Michalak with KYUNA DREAM MERCHANT. Lovely boy nice good head, good neck and shoulders, good top line. Moved very well.

2nd Mr & Mrs Roberts with CAIRACAILIE SPICE OF LIFE.

CLASS 4: JUNIOR DOG

1st Mr & Mrs Harker with HERNWOODACHILLES AT ETTRICK. What a lovely masculine head with good tan. Lovely depth to the chest, lovely top line. Moved with drive.

2nd Mr & Mrs Sandiford and Miss Lewis with HERNWOOD APOLLO. Lovely boy, this boy was very much the same as 1st place, tan slightly richer and body slightly fuller. Moved well.

CLASS 5: YEARLING DOG

1st Miss Wrigley with KATTANDALE CANTERBURY. Lovely boy, nice tan on a well chiselled head. Good top line, good front and rear angulations, moved well.

2nd Mr & Mrs Harker with HERNWOOD ACHILLES AT ETTRICK.

CLASS 6: NOVICE DOG

1st Miss Matthewson handling for Mr & Mrs Briton with GRAYLACIER PORTREATH. Nice tan on a nice head and neck sitting on good shoulders. Nice top line and moved well.

2nd Mr & Mrs Mitchell with KIMGILEE MAORI STORYTELLER BY BROBRUICK. Nice boy, lovely head, good tan, nice neck and shoulders. Moved well.

CLASS 7: GRADUATE DOG

1st Mr & Mrs Mitchell with ROYDACK RUBY HIDDEN GEM AT BROBRUICK JW. A lovely tan on a well chiselled head, good neck and shoulders. Good depth nice front and rear angulations. Moved excellently. Also won reserved best dog.

2nd Mr & Mrs Melville with TSRUHNOVA TUMNUS JW. Again a lovely head, great depth, good line. Moved well.

CLASS 8: POST GRADUATE DOG

1st Mr Johnston with GORDON-SETT STYLE HEARTBREAKER FOR GLENQUIN. Good head, nice tan. Presented well, nice depth, good front and rear angulations. Moved well.

2nd Ms Halliday with YENNADON REISS. Nice boy, lovely head, good top line moving showing fit for purpose.

CLASS 9: LIMIT DOG

1st Mr & Mrs Sandiford and Miss Lewis with BENBUIE ROCK ON TO HERNWOOD JW. Nice head, good tan. A lovely matched dog well presented. Lovely on the move, gave him best dog.

2nd Miss Warren with BENBUIE SECRET AGENT JW. Nice head, good clear tan on a nice head and shoulder. Moved well but needs to be faster.

CLASS 10: OPEN DOG

1st Mrs Smith with GLENKINCHIE SOUL DRIFTER. Nice boy with lovely head and neck. Lovely depth, moved well.

CLASS 11: VETERAN BITCH

1st Mrs Upton-Lovett with ROYDACK BLAZIN A TRAIL. Nice bitch of good type, nice tan not much greying yet. She moved well with drive on the front and rear.

2nd Mrs Powell with KIMGILEE HIPI. A smaller bitch, nice head and shoulder. Moved reasonably well.

CLASS 12: MINOR PUPPY BITCH

1st Mrs Johnston & Miss N with GLENQUIN PHOENIX. Pretty bitch, lovely nice tan. Good front and rear angulation. Moved well.

2nd Mr & Mrs Sandiford & Miss Lewis with HERNWOOD BUFFY SUMMERS. Nice bitch, moved well. Nice top line with good front and rear angulations.

CLASS 13: PUPPY BITCH

1st Mrs Justice with LUDSTAR LA LA LAND TO LIRIC (IMP IT). Nice bitch with a good tan, nice head and good reach of neck, good shoulder. Overall good frame of a young Gordon Setter. Moved very well.

2nd Mrs Roberts & Mrs Watson with KYUNA DREAM OF MAGIC AT MOONGLADE. Nice feminine bitch, lovely tan, nice head and shoulders. Good top line, moved well.

CLASS 14: JUNIOR BITCH

2nd Mrs Sandiford & Miss Lewis with HERNWOOD APHRODITE . Nice head with a good tan, nice little bitch. Moves well.

CLASS 15: YEARLING BITCH

1st Mrs Slaughter with CAIRACAILIE NIGHT OF LOVE WITH ORDETT JW. Lovely bitch. Nice tan. Moves well. A good top line and good rear drive.

2nd Mrs Wrigley with KATTANDALE BLACK FERN (AI). Nice head with a good tan. A good reach of neck, nice shoulder. Good top line and moved well.

CLASS 17: GADUATE BITCH

2nd Mrs Melville with TSRUHNOVA TARKHEENA JW. Nice bitch, good tan on nice head lovely neck and shoulders. Good front and rear angulations.

CLASS 18: POST GRADUATE

1st Mrs Crowther with HERNWOOD STELLA FIREWORK. Nice feminine bitch with a nice reach of neck and well placed shoulder, nice top line and moved well.

2nd Mrs Powell with KIMGILEE MAORI SECRET. Again a nice bitch with a good tan. Nice shoulders, nice top line. Just not as settled on the move as 1st place.

CLASS 19: LIMIT BITCH

Some mouths were not great and the grumbling of some male exhibits while going over them may be quite off putting for some judges. I must thank my two very able stewards for their kindness and diligence throughout the day.

  1. Halliday’s Ch Yennadon the Druid JW. Well balanced dog. Masculine head but no coarseness, good neck and shoulders, deep chest and strong quarters. Moved with purpose covering the ground well.
  2. Cawthen’s Marshmoor Magna. Another nice type, finer in head than one. Well chiselled over skull and good eye shape. Good overall conformation with enough bone. Moved soundly.

  2. Beese’s Lainnireach Liberty Bell at Asheys. Smaller bitch but well balanced throughout. Sweet head and expression. Sound conformation, not as mature as one.

  1. Williams’ Longrow I Love to Boogie JW. Nice type no over exaggeration. Feminine head, good eye shape, clean neck leading to well placed shoulders, good topline and sound quarters. Covered the ground well on move.
  2. Smith’s Glenkinchie Soul Star. Another quality bitch, has all the essentials, good head, good front, deep chest, nice short coupling and positive quarters. A bit fidgety today but moved positively.
  3. Wrigley’s Kattandale Tri Nations.
